The former family home of the Earls of Lonsdale, 13th century Askham Hall – nestled between the Lakes and Pennines – will be the setting for a new series of special Wine Evenings launching in May 2015.
Hosted by award-winning sommelier Nico Chièze, Askham Hall’s Head Chef, Richard Swale, will prepare unique menus to complement the wines, using an abundance of local produce direct from the Lowther family estate and drawing on this experience working alongside leading culinary legends such as John Burton Race and Marc Veyrat.
Askham Hall’s Maître de Maison, Nico Chièze, is a former two times winner of the Scotland and North of England sommelier of the year competition and joined Askham last year following a long career working in Michelin-starred restaurants in both France and England. Most recently, he was Wine Director and Duty Manager at the Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel for 14 years. Earlier in his career, he was also a Sommelier at Michel Roux’s famous Waterside Inn at Bray-on-Thames – at the time, the only Michelin 3* restaurant in the country.
Nico will host the new Wine Evenings alongside Guy Cliffe, guest speaker from Maisons Marques et Domaines, which is owned by Champagne Roderer and has one of the best portfolios of wine in the country.
The six Wine Evenings confirmed for 2015 are:
- Italy at its finest (19 May)
- Champagne Roderer (16 June)
- Large format bottles (1 September) – Nico and Guy’s personal favourite!
- Ramos Pinto Portugal (27 October)
- Meerlust South Africa (10 November)
- Bordeaux at its best (8 December)
The Portugal and South Africa evenings cost £100 per person including several courses with wine, while the four other events are £150 per person. There is also a special accommodation rate of £150 per room.
