Prestigious honours for Clifton pub

THE George and Dragon, Clifton, has won twoprestigious awards and is shortlisted for another.

The pub has beenhonoured with the Alastair Sawday local, seasonal and organic produce award and a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence and is shortlisted in the Cumbria Tourism awards.

Every year in its guide to some of the best pubs and inns of England and Wales, Alastair Sawday’s team gives 12 awards in four categories. The George and Dragon is a 2011 winner of the local, seasonal and organic produce award. As there are more than 900 pubs in the guide, winning is a terrific achievement for the hard-working licensees chefs and staff.

Charles Lowther, George and Dragon owner, said: “We are overjoyed to have been given this award by Alastair Sawdaypublications. It means so much to us to haverecognition for the hard work we have put into building our business here at the George and Dragon, based on our philosophy of sourcing our ingredients as much as possible from right here at Lowther.

“I would like to say aparticularly large thank you to our head chef, Paul McKinnon, and the kitchen team, who have worked tirelessly over the past two years to produce the lovely dishes they do from our ingredients. This award is a testament to the whole team’s hard work.”

Extract from the George and Dragon’s entry in the Sawday’s guide say:

“Charles Lowther has found a chef who doesperfect justice to theslow-grow breeds of beef, pork and lamb produced on the Lowther Estate and you’ll find lovely wines to match, 16 by the glass. Ales and cheeses are local, berries and mushrooms are foraged, vegetables are home-grown … and hissignature starter, twice-baked cheese souffle with a hint of spinach, is divine.”

The George and Dragon has also won a 2011 TripAdvisor certificate of excellence, which is awarded to properties which consistently receiveexcellent ratings from its members.

Comments from TripAdvisor include: “The service was excellent, friendly and not at allintrusive” and “This was the best meal that we have had in a long time and was the perfect end to our holiday.”

The inn has also been shortlisted for the Taste of Cumbria category in this year’s Cumbria Tourism Awards. The winners will be announced on 7th July at a black tie event at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal.
