Welcome to the George and Dragon,
More than just a local.
What makes the George and Dragon so special is that its source of inspiration, history, passion and produce comes from the owners family Estates, right on its doorstep, where food has been produced for more than 800 years. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible at our own gardens and surrounding fields at Askham Hall (where the owner Charles Lowther grew up) and is just a couple of miles from the George and Dragon. Our philosophy is that of sustainability, simplicity and taste and whatever we don’t grow or rear ourselves at Askham Hall, we ensure, when possible, that the rest of the fresh, seasonal produce we use is sourced from local suppliers and farmers within about 20 miles of the pub.
“I take huge pride in the quality of produce on my family estate and our gardens at Askham Hall and being able to offer people the opportunity to experience and enjoy all it has to offer is wonderful. It’s important for people to know where their food comes from and we can give them not only all the answers but also a place to experience the heritage of the area.”
Pub & restaurant
The George and Dragon is an 18th century coaching inn. It has been lovingly restored by local craftsmen who have reused stone, slate flags, design and colours sympathetic to the Georgian period.
Comfy sofas, bare wooden tables and intimate alcoves make it a perfect place to relax and unwind. Photographs, paintings, old prints and archive images tell stories of the Lowther Estate’s unique heritage. And over time, more stories will be added.
When you visit the George and Dragon in Cumbria, you can enjoy a pint of local ale, relax with a glass of fine wine and indulge in the Lowther produce, feeling that you’re somewhere rather unique.
Courtyard and garden
Chunky, weathered tables sit against the front of the building and local limestone, granite and sandstone have been used to create a high-walled enclosed courtyard (a perfect sun trap) which then leads into a garden.
Families, bikes, walking boots and dogs
Families are very welcome, as are cyclists and walkers. We have a secure place to store bikes overnight. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bar area (but not the restaurant).
Much of our produce – we grow ourselves at our gardens at Askham Hall which is about two miles away. For anything we don’t grow ourselves we buy from local suppliers and farmers, many of whom are on our family estate. Head chef Gareth Webster changes the main menu monthly and specials daily, depending on what produce is brought in by our gardener of by one of our local suppliers.
You can choose from our tables in the restaurant in amongst the buzz and the action from the open kitchen or enjoy a quieter spot in one of our alcoves and intimate dining areas. Or you can choose to sit and relax in the bar and enjoy the same menu there. Wherever you eat you can enjoy the relaxing, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Call us on 01768 865 381 to make a reservation.
Our lunch menu is perfect for a light bite or a longer leisurely lunch and our dinner menu and daily specials offers something for every occasion, whether you dine here every week or come for a special occasion and want to treat yourself. And on Sundays, you can enjoy our fantastic Sunday lunches.
As well as the below please note that vegan, gluten free and dairy free menus are all available.
